It is their latest attempt at scaring companies into paying money to them and would be classed as a protection racket if only they had the power to knock a site off Google. The Cowboys don’t have this power, though some of the techniques they use could get a site banned by Google. Techniques such as link farming are designed to ‘trick’ Google into giving a site higher rankings and some big names have fallen fowl of this technique

mmmmmmmmmmmmm…….. fell into so many traps here! alwaysbeen a little unsure of this company, gave them the benefit of the doubt tho and they did a decent job. But last year i got a fewphone calls saying i had to pay £300 for something here and there! this happened a few times at each end of the year, like you do when you pre-ocupied working when they ring – paid it. i have recently change my sites to their server! problems are filtering in now, pics dont upload etc and im being told i have to pay £150 per web site for them to sort it?????? like hell i will. they have spoken to me on the phone, but they havent met me in person yet!

Last year I was conned into taking a year of being the first hit on google with my chosen 7 phrases for £300, They implied they were from google!!.. Only one of my words turned up on google first page all year! I kept complaining but they do nothing. It seems to be just a scam. I would have taken them to court had I not just had my first baby.

It is certainly heartening that their ideas are becoming less widespread. Although it is worrying that those who seem the most extreme in their opposition and in their ignorance tend to be from sects which promote having massive families so they may then have a resurgence in the future.

Whilst they are weak and support for gay marriage is strong it is so important to win it so they are then in a position in the future of trying to make a change rather than maintain the current system.

I have a gay blog and ofter homophobic people leave some nasty comments in which they express themselves in a way I can’t reproduce. Ignorance and bigotry, mainly found in religious communities, further promotes the idea of homosexuality as a disorder. Many churches may see homosexuality as an act of the devil’s influence or even a demonic possession. However these sects of people are shrinking. Fortunately.

I have had the misfortune in dealing with First Search or Unitel. They do very little work or very poor quality & standard. Do not use this firm (First Search or Unitel) they have even contacted me from a different office, to sell there services, when I asked if they were the same company as I had given money to & but not done any work, you guessed it no reply same as when I asked about my guaranteed 1st page of Google ad campaign that can not be found no reply. Top tip don’t pay till the work is done, or as we are now a mouthy contract with a small firm that can be cancelled at any time. BUT DO NOT USE First Search Direct or Unitel

Hi Phil, thanks for the info. I had originally written something to send round work and hadn’t modified the “we probably can’t move anything to be using yet” statement. We recently heard of a major client finally moving away from IE6 so are a bit hesitent to be at the bleeding edge!

For anyone not in that situation then yeah go for it – it’s people experimenting with this cool new stuff that didn’t work on every browser at the time that led to loads of the stuff we use every day now. Or of course for people on personal sites to experiment etc.

WebSockets are most definitely out in the wild and in production. For older browsers there are fallback options with the most common being fallback to Flash using web-socket-js (https://github.com/gimite/web-socket-js) which adds a WebSocket object to the browser runtime if the native object doesn’t exist. Our service (Pusher) is also used by a number of companies in production. You can see a small selection here: http://pusher.com/examples And client include Groupon, SlideShare and MailChimp (sorry for the salesy text, I just wanted to highlight that this stuff is production ready ).

I have had the misfortune in dealing with First Search or Unitel. when I didn’t want to renew for the 2nd year as I couldn’t see what they had done for £200 they used bullying tactics. I don’t know how they are getting away with it in this day and age. You really really should consider everything that has been said above, I have taken the time to write this as I don’t think they should get away with it.

Yeah Google+ merges together the best privacy/sharing bits of the other services but doesn’t really add much extra. At least for me.

I’ve heard people rave about the hangout stuff, and if you have lots of other google stuff that will all integrate well – Gennas picassa groups pulled in to google+ look really good. The only other google eco-system I use are analytics, webmaster tools and groups though so it doesn’t have those benefits for me.

“I can only post to a group subset” – I wondered why I rarely see updates from you anymore on FB!

Facebook: highest privacy but could easily cull the friends list.

Twitter: free-for-all, have had it private before but find it more entertaining public, not that I post much of interest.

Google+: tumbleweed, though I like the circles idea – unfortunately it’s pretty much useless unless everyone migrates over from FB. I think there was good reason for the migration from Bebo/MySpace to FB, but as G+ is so similar can anyone really be bothered moving their entire social life over when the two sites are ultimately pretty similar?

I too was cold-called by First Search aka Unitel Direct, and succumbed to their incredibly devious, accelerated patter, including insisting I must pay upfront (stupid stupid fell for it. How do they sleep?)

They ‘designed’ hah! me a website – i.e. I spent several gruelling months training the er ‘designer’ how to do it. There were inumerable delays and obfuscations, finally it went live on Dec 1, 2010.
6 months later, having not received one single email enquiry from the contacts page, I discover through Statcounter, that hundreds of people had visited the site and many had tried to get in contact. Another few gruelling weeks communication with Unitel later, it appears at last to be working, but of course Unitel, won’t offer compensation for the loss of potentially tens of thousands of £s worth of work and refuse to take any blame. Dealings with Unitel are frustrating, Kafkaesque – your sanity is at risk, let alone your pocket.

Glad your Trading Standards were so helpful and that they pointed you here to confirm your suspicions means they must have heard of them before. The sheer number of hits this post gets on my wee blog is both amazing and scary.

Good luck with your dispute. if enough people dispute charges against a company their credit rating with the clearing bank gets hammered, and they very quickly find it very difficult to operate.

For anyone else who hears of a story that seems too good to be true, search for “ scam”. If loads of hits and stories come up then beware! If none come up it could still mean they have only just started using that name so still search around for similar deals to see if it is known to be dodgy.

My local trading standards officer pointed out this blog post when I contacted them with regards “Insight magazine LTD”
I am lucky that my local trading standards were so helpful and provided such good advice regarding this company and their practices, in fact I drew tears in thanking them for their help.
It is a really bad sick feeling when you realise that you have been a victim of a scam or theft of money or property. In the case of this company its more than just that as the sales technique is so personal and convincing, I cannot understand how the sales director or anyone associated or employed with this company can sleep at night, praying on small businesses, shame on you!.
Insight magazine seems to pray on small businesses exibiting at up and coming events at the NEC Birmingham. Also by the look of there magazine online they also target other smaller exhibitions in the area also.
According to their website at the time of writing (which I have forwarded screen shots to trading standards and also my lawer)
Distribution
Insight Magazine is available throughout carefully selected distribution points including the Arcadian Centre, Jewellery Quarter, Brindley Place, Mailbox, New Street, Rep Bar, different apartment blocks including Heritage Court, Liberty Place, King Edwards Warf, Millennium. Insight is also available in a selection of Fitness Centres, Golf Clubs & Top Hotels not to mention Birmingham Children’s Hospital, National Express, NEC information points, NEC Train Station and various hotels on the NEC complex. Picking up a lot of extra coverage at the Birmingham Airport Hotels we are backed by the copies throughout Asda, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Tesco and Makro.

The second call I asked to speak to someone at an information point within the NEC, they said the same. Both conversations I have recorded.

Thats the 1st add, the second add I never did agree too. They sent the confirmation and the proof, I, at that stage I agreed to nothing. They have all their bases covered it seems, the date it had to be approved by was hours before I recieved this, the subsequent hours of my precious time were filled with her relentlessly calling me and my staff to try to get a 3rd add, we had won an award ect. With this I was filled with rage and did not say anything on the phone or otherwise other than phone back later. They are now claiming that it doesnt matter if I confirmed or not its within their terms and conditions that not replying means that you accept. They put an add proof together literally minutes after I hung up the phone, I emailed back with not accepted, not aproved not confirmed ect. They emailed me back telling me as per what you have said above to ask the FBS, Ask the flipping FBS? ok so are they gonna tell me that you are in the right and me in the wrong I flipping think not! Also they told me that if I did not aggree that they would print 2 pages blank in the “magazine”… hmm
I at one stage after the first add that I stupidly aggreed to, they took the payment for the second… I had no clue that they had taken the payment for this its outrageous. I am disputing this with my credit card company at present.
The random threats of we will take this further, I am actually quite prepaired and would welcome them to take me to court, If I do not take action first that is. I hope that they like haggis? as I am told by TS that the case would have to take place here in Scotland and by Scottish law.

I am just in the process of taking legal action against Unitel Direct or first search consultancy as I later discovered, via my credit card company as they sold me a load of keywords over the telephone and a guaranteed first position in Google, Bing, Yahoo, for seven keywords of my choosing.

They optimised my website with different keywords than I specified over the telephone and removed a lot of local areas from my keywords that I considered very relevant to my business without my consent.

I am now worse of than I was before in terms of google ranking thanks to them removing areas from from keywords.

I have also just spend over a full day preparing a very lengthy case against them printing emails off and documenting my dealings with this company from start to finish all in the hope that I get my £250+VAT back.

My advise to anyone considering using them is don’t they should be avoided like the plague.

Dear All

Reading the above comments, I am also compelled to write about my experience with the said company.

All beware, if you have any dealings with this company you may have the same results as myself. Stress from not being able to talk to anybody and when making a complaint having to wait 36 hours for a non-existent call back. No one in authority is ever available to take your call. They con you out of your money by promising fantastic results from ALL your chosen key words which also never materialises. In my case they did not provide a copy of the terms and conditions until after I had paid. In the T&C you will see that their sales statement of ‘All keys words’ working for page one listing changes to ‘up to 7′ which in fact means just ONE. When you want to cancel your contract with them you have to give them your pass codes to access your site to “remove their work” and if you do not they will ‘take you to court’ if you do not pay for another year. (the following is an extract from an email received from them) ” Failure to pay the renewal invoice within 14 days of receiving this then the account with become a bad debtor which may or be passed onto a 3rd party collection agency to retrieve the monies owed” After they had ‘removed their work’ I had to spend hours fixing my site.

Just as a comparison, my second site which I SEO’d myself is far more successful than the site they did.

I cannot with any conscience recommend this company and would suggest to anybody considering using their services…think very carefully!

First Search Consultancy are thieves and cowboys, liars and scam artists. If you read through their terms and conditions, which if you are for some strange reason considering, you will find that they not only don’t have to provide results but can charge you for not getting them! If they decide that your updating of your site harms your listing in Google or whomever then they can and will charge for “fixing” your site. As for me, we paid £1000 and were promised first page positions for 14 keywords within the UK and European listings. I had their promise clarified several times that all 14 would have us on page one of Google and they said every one. Out of all of these there are only 4 keywords where we are on page one and then only in the UK. After several months of complaining I am no further forward and now just want my money back. Will try suing them.

First Search Consultancy Scam – SEO Scam – Cowboys – Misselling SEO – Misleading Sales

I have been ripped off by these cowboys First Search Consultancy and their customer service are most unhelpful, nor do they even try and offer a solution.

Has anyone ever successfully had their money returned? Or as it is a service that they offer – have you been able to get the work done properly by another company and First Search Consultancy pay for this?

You are right to be wary. Even according to Google no-one can guarantee first page ranking http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35291

Anyone claiming such is either using underhand techniques to get your money or underhand techniques to get you ranking higher. When Google are happy to drop BMW from rankings (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/4685750.stm) for black-hat SEO stuff why would they hesitate with you or anyone else?

I have just got off the phone to unitel direct which is also first search.
They have offered me 1st page on google within 4 weeks at the most
They have offered to split the payments of £250 plus vat into two payments over two months.
They said i will not have to pay the second payment until the work is completed and i see results on google.
According to them there is no obscure search phrase, they have emailed a breakdown of what they will do.
They sound genuine, but reading the comments on this site i am not so sure.

I have just read your blog and thought you might be interested to know that I have had the same problem with Insight Magazine. I have taken advice from consumer direct and am taking legal action against them. They are breaking the supply of goods and services act 1982, and are also missrepresenting at point of sale regarding their distribution. therefore in breech of contract.
It would be well worth you persuing the matter further. Trading standards have also been in contact with me and are looking into them.
If you want to get in touch feel free, lets make sure they don’t get away with it anymore!1

Was contacted by a company called Unitel, on a Google search it says it incorporates a company I think we are talking about. They informed me that my current SEO, another bunch of cowboys, as they have folded. One thing though I did reach first page on google search as promised by my former SEO. Anyway they wanted to charge me £200 to keep first page status. They were trying to pressure sell. I did not fold. Keep away from this lot!

Same old story for me: Not enough time myself to do any SEO so thought they were reasonable.
However, they said they would optimize my site, but then created that single page redirect nonsense, which has their name first in the address. Clearly, that is the only part to get results as they must be relying on it being a page of a vast website, so to speak. It is NOT what they sell though.
However, after endless complaints, they did some work on my site and amazingly it worked!
Unfortunately, they optimized for Sunderland, even though I live in Merseyside!!!!
When I told them this they denied doing anything and said it must have been me!!!!!!!!
So, on the one hand they told me they had optimized my site, then they told me they hadn’t done any work, despite my paying for it…
They can’t even get their own stories right. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!

I have been completely ripped off by these scammers! I paid £1000.00 upfont for a 7 page website – they took the full amount from my card despite saying they take half upfront and half on delivery of the site. I explained that, being a photographer, image and design were of paramount importance. I sent in graphics which I wanted including on my site, I sent in examples of other sites which I wanted mine modelled on and what they eventually delivered was a one page splash page which was an insult to my intelligence, an insult to web design and ultimately damaging to my business. I looked like it had been design by a blind 5 year old child and was so bad that I got them to take it down! I asked for my money back and they refused saying they had fulfilled their obligations to me as it did come up on page one of google, but under their name ‘first search consultancy’. Does anyone have any advice about how I can get my money back?

What you’ll get is charged a lot to post some ads on google which you can do yourself you will not get 1st page on google for any useful queries regarding your jewellery from their “help”. They’ll also dump loads of keywords at the top and bottom of your page which will help in the short term but looks bad and will put off visitors. I recently had them call asking odd questions such as my full name and address without actually offering a service at all… obviously i didnt but kept them talking… it was quite clear they were looking for personal info.
I did a bit of research and found that a local rival company uses them to optimize his site.
I can only imagine they wanted to gain access to my website (since it sits above his) to sabotage it.
Really shady company…….

i bought into their sales crap about a year ago, their customer service is crap, the company is crap and the service they try to provide is equally so

STAY WELL AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY – BUT IF YOU BOUGHT. . .

i just sued them to get my money back as they didnt achieve the page one rankings promised. i went to court and they didnt even turn up so i got a couple of hundred pounds more because of court costs etc

they couldnt even pay me on the right day though so i just had to call them again, the flunky on the desk couldnt or wouldnt put me through to accounts and the management is to cowardly to come to the phone

MORAL OF THE STORY – STAY AS FAR AWAY AS YOU CAN FROM THIS COMPANY

Stay well away, I know how to SEO a web site and what they offer is a joke, their design skills are woefully inadequate, just dont go there, they are also part of Unitel Direct, so bodyswerve them too if you dont want to be ripped!

We have a client who had the pleasure of dealing with these guys. We’ve recently had to change their FTP passwords, completely unrelated and not due to any threats of taking down the clients site, of course!

Over the weekend I was clearing through some old letters etc and found some previous correspondance with my MP. It was over the DTI commissioning some company to make a website which had really appalling accessibility problems. He replied saying he had forwarded my concerns on to the relevent people and get back to me with their response. In the letter he used the phrase “I wouldn’t really call myself a technophobe, but…” so it’s probably for the best he isn’t voting on these kinds of issues

My MP also voted for this bill, despite not being at the second reading. I had quite a long back and forth e-mail and letter conversation with him about the pros and cons and pleaded with him not to allow it to be rushed through, but he went against constituent wishes and voted yes anyway.

I must be mad to have agreed to use them for a second year, only doing so after they demonstrated that they had got us a natural listing on one page. I was pressured into an agreement after they showed a scam site for another SEO company. Despite many unanswered calls, emails and a threat of legal action today 16.04.10 still no response. When first contacted they represented themselves as representing Google, clearly an absolute con and waste of money. I intend to investigate legal action. Any help appreciated.

Hi, I was harassed by First Search and Steve Lyons for around 2 weeks and fortunately recorded some of the calls.. I was promised 1st page listings on GOOGLE for 7 key phrases and paid £290.00. I currently stop at page 20 and cant find my ‘Splash Page’ anywhere. Take my advice and record the telephone conversations so then you have the evidence to support my comments. WHAT A RIP OFF, IT’S A JOKE…!!!! If I had more time I would take legal action…. A total waste of money and what they produced for me could have been done by a High School teenager with minimal knowledge of web design and probably have cost me £20……

Have been prstered by this company and unfortunately appear to having fallen foul of their sales patter. My company is only just over a year old and is obviously keen to gain market share. Have also been using Lavora Marketing who have got me firsy page adword space on Google at some expense. Being a semi retired Chartered Surveyor with no experience of such things I guess I was a soft touch. First Choice originally approached under the disguise of being Google. Any comments would be appreciated.

What amuses me most about these people is how they manage to have damaging things about them still appear on the first page of search results.

Surely if they could engineer that not happening as well as good phrases for them appearing high up, i.e. “SEO services” and not “SEO Services X Town” they might be able to show that they can do what they claim to be able to do for clients.

Mike Lancaster was the same with me on the phone. He tried to intimidate me by suggesting what people had written was slanderous. Someone needs to teach him the difference between slander and lible for starters. The fact of the matter is that none of these complainants have any interest other than getting back the money which was payed in good will for a service which was consequently not received. I am sure that if those who feel that they have been ripped off by Storm Media (or one of its other names) should be able to gather evidence by accessing their Google Analytics account. This should show whether the service they have received is as it should be.

What I mean is that there are many ideas on what is the correct religious teachings etc (different branches of every religion exist) and so all of these different religions and forks in religions will have slightly different views on marriage in terms of what is in vogue or whatever that decade.

I don’t think anyone can disagree with homosexual marriage without coming from a religious point of view, even if it is a semi-institutionalised religious view. I agree with you that the only disagreement comes from religious ideologies.

It depends what you mean by religious. Human recorded history doesn’t pre-date any time when there was no religion. In most countries the state and religion were tied together so saying the state authorised it is also in some ways saying the religion did.

What is certain is that the argument used by the Mormons in this case – that marriage is between a man and a woman – has not always been the case. Not long ago in the US it was between one white woman and one white man a while back it became between one white person and one non-white person (of opposite genders) then later still between two people of opposite genders of any race. Before that marriages between one man and several women were legal as were (are?) one man and one pre-teen girl.

Marriages also used to be business arrangements to tie powerful families together. Wives were also bought and sold as chattel to be the property of men. The current traditional marriage has the father of the bride giving away the bride – the wording is no accident. Up until the 70s in the UK wives could be raped by their husbands without it being defined as rape.

Changes to the laws of divorce and re-marriage etc mean that there was probably no year in the last century when the definition of marriage stayed constant in every country on Earth for a year. There is also the fact that marriage is defined differently in different countries throughout the world – and in different states in the US!

Isn’t marriage itself a fairly religious concept, so nay opposition will have to come from religion. I know pair bonding itself isn’t religious and is actually the norm even in more ‘tribal’ societies etc.

The geek in me needs to mention the MAC code

With respect to the MAC code there is the MAC address that is associated with the network interfaces on a PC and there is a MAC code which is like the PAC code you have with a mobile phone when you wish to change provider. You request the MAC code from your current broadband provider which your new one uses to migrate you. This does last for about 28 days before you need to request a new one.

I can’t remember if I had or not, possibly. It’s good all the same. The live “acoustic” album is decent, you can listen to it on the Fat Cat website, which i think is http://www.fat-cat.co.uk.

the sound was alright where we were standing, not great but it was more: vocals >>> drums >>>>>>>> guitar >>> bass/keyboard >>>>>>>>>>> rhythm Spent this morning listening to the first album. You must have let me hear it before as 2 tracks were played last night and I knew the words to them.

I thought FR were really good last night, but they need to sack their soundman. That’s the second time i’ve seen them and the second time the sound has really let them down.

Last night it seemed to be:

drums >>> vocals >>>>>>>>>>>>> guitars >>> bass/keyboard

But aye, they are a really good band, just wish they’d play in a better venue or get someone else to do their sound.

Oi! I think you’ll find the Kerosene Board died because I felt everyone else was getting younger :p

That and the Kerosene Community Forums were just becoming a comedy goldmine rather than a proper music forum.

Wish I’d kept it going now just for the comedy value, but now I really am too old!
